The male proboscis monkey has a strikingly large, pear-shaped nose. The proboscis monkey is a primate that lives in the rainforests and mangrove forests of the Asian island of Borneo. The males' noses can grow up to 10 cm long. The strange thing is that the nose is not a particularly effective organ of smell at all. Science believes that the males' large noses are to impress the females - and they can make a loud noise that can warn the herd and scare away rivals and enemies.
Proboscis monkeys are active during the day; they live in small family groups with one male and several females and young. They eat leaves and fruits.
