The ukulele is a "real" instrument and can be tuned correctly and played beautifully - even when it is not played by trained musicians, it gives a good sound.

Although the ukulele is not a toy instrument, it is incredibly durable and tolerates being played with by children.

The ukulele is a 4-, 6- or 8-string instrument that looks a lot like a small guitar (but isn't). The ukulele originates from Portugal. However, the ukulele is probably most associated as an instrument from Hawaii, where Portuguese workers brought the instrument with them in the 19th century. The ukulele became part of the culture here and the name Ukulele also comes from Hawaii and means "jumping/dancing louse" after the dancing movements of the fingers over the strings.
